Julie Degel, creator of Ale and Apron

Welcome to Ale and Apron

I’m Julie, the home cook behind Ale and Apron. I live in sunny Florida with my husband and our pup. I love gardening, good beer, and putting my own spin on recipes.

I love to make and share comfort food with creative twists—from approachable dinners for two to sourdough baking (especially homemade sourdough bagels and dinner rolls).

Since I’m usually cooking for my husband and myself, sometimes I make just enough for one meal, and other times I lean into Sunday batch preps—like hearty casseroles, meatloaves, and soups—so we have easy meals for the week or dishes to freeze for later. You’ll find a little of both here.

Ale and Apron isn’t my first food blog. I started blogging back in 2012 and ran my previous blog for eight years before selling it in 2020. During that time, my recipes were featured by publications and brands including TABASCO and Eggland’s Best. Those recipes were published under my maiden name, Julie Murkerson. After taking a few years off, I decided it was time to start sharing recipes again.

How Ale and Apron Got Its Name

My husband is a homebrewer, and I’m the home cook, so Ale and Apron seemed like a fitting name for my blog!

We usually have something interesting on tap, and I enjoy experimenting with his homebrews in my cooking and baking. I also share store-bought beer alternatives so you can try these recipes at home, too.

Of course, not every recipe here contains beer. You’ll also find plenty of classic and modern comfort food where I’m simply testing new ideas and putting my own spin on familiar favorites.

Creamy skillet chicken with golden-brown chicken breast pieces in a beer pan sauce, garnished with fresh parsley.
Apple butter quick bread sliced on a cutting board, with two slices stacked.
Pickled pepper and cheddar sourdough beer bagels on a plate
Creamy mushroom pasta in a white pasta bowl as seen from looking towards the food at 45 degrees.
